1870 Indian Cent, PCGS/CAC AU-55, FS-801, Snow-14, Doubled Die Reverse
(TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE - please inquire) FS-801, Snow-14, Doubled Die Reverse. A boldly doubled Reverse die, this Reverse die also used on the Snow-2 variety. Probably an earlier die state as it does not show the heavy repolishing with die striations listed in Snow. A very attractive original AU/Unc coin, certainly superior to most AU specimens of the date I see. Claims to AU-58 (certainly at NGC). The slight mushiness of the Reverse, which is a characteristic of the variety, may be the cause for the grade assigned. This is not a Snow variety that PCGS will attribute, however both major services will certify this under their Variety programs as FS-801, the Cherrypickers number. I have included a number of extra images, some take prior to certification, to help show the various DDR details. While the variety is not noted on the holder, I will guarantee attribution as such if resubmitted. Scarce with CAC in the grade, only 7 coins versus about 170 PCGS/NGC combined. For the FS-801 variety, PCGS Pop of three coins, with nothing better until MS-63; NGC shows 2 coins. A specialist recently offered and sold an NGC AU-55 specimen, which in my opinion had less attractive surfaces, for something more than that listed here. Whatever … I will just say “nice coin” and leave it to the observer to make up their own mind.
