1907 Indian Cent, NGC Proof-64RB, Great Color!
An original Choice Proof example of this common date, with very attractive toning. Certified as “Red Brown” by NGC, which brings up the point that color designations are handled differently for Proof versus Business Strike Small Cents, both Indian and Lincoln. What would normally be “Brown” in terms of a Business Strike (Uncirculated) coin is sometimes certified as “Red Brown” if struck as a Proof. In any case, this shows a sort of orange-mahogany color overall, the Reverse being a bit lighter. When tipped to the light, this coin displays a range of red, blue and orange toning, on deep watery mirrors. Earlier dates with this sort of toning were commonly long stored in the original Mint tissue paper, as issued, however by 1907 I believe Proof coins were packaged differently, so the color is likely from storage in a paper envelope. The sense of a mild fingerprint on the Obverse tends to support this probability, while adding to the charm of the coin rather than seeming a defect. There is also a sense of light Cameo contrast, possibly highlighted due to the color, but not enough to be designated. All in all a “cool” coin worthy of a mild premium, even if only believe this is a “Brown” coin.
