A stunning original AU/Unc example of this popular Key Date. Recovered out of Europe, this was likely an Uncirculated coin that picked up the slightest detectable wear while sitting in storage somewhere. This consists of basically light contact on Liberty’s cheek and hair ribbon, with essentially no other marks to mention. Frankly, although I poo-poo the grade in general terms, I don’t know why this did NOT get an AU-58+. I am also just as sure that an expert “mechanic” could work on this coin and could possibly get it into an MS holder in the MS-62 range. Scarce with a CAC sticker, as persnickety as they are with Bronze & Copper coinage; only 18 versus a combined AU-58 population at PCGS & NGC of almost 190 coins. Unlike some other series, this is one where a “bean” does make a difference in price. While I am asking a premium to be sure, compare the value to a coin in the MS-62/63 range, which on average would not look as good!
