1925-S Buffalo Nickel, Choice Almost Uncirculated, Tough Coin
An original AU+ example of this seriously better date. About the typical strike, a bit mushy on the Obverse, the Reverse more normal. The problem in this case was not strike specifically, but die preparation. For some reason, the Philly die shop had a major problem this year, and virtually all the Obverse dies produced show general mushiness, which is made worse by the extended hammering the dies took at San Francisco and Denver, in an attempt to stretch production out of them by frequent repolishing. This coin would normally have a shot at certifying AU-58 however there is a light planchet lamination on the Reverse, common to this issue. That would prevent certification in anything other than a Details holder, so I did not see the point. Offered as the equivalent of a mid grade AU, and frankly maybe cheap considering how few I see like this to buy.
