1921-S Buffalo Nickel, Almost Uncirculated, Rare
1921-S Buffalo Nickel, Almost Uncirculated, Rare
A major Key Date in this grade range. A decent strike although the dies show some erosion and stress lines due to long use, made obvious by a die crack joining the Native's nose to the Obverse rim. This also appears to be a 2-1/2 Feather variety, showing partial abrasion of the rear most feather. The Reverse die is less affected by die stress and shows a nice, full rounded horn. The "line" showing from 4:00 of the Obverse upward below the die crack is a natural, minor surface planchet flaw or crack. For some reason, many of the planchets on early to mid-1920's San Francisco Mint Buffalos have planchet problems, making high grade certifiable examples even tougher to find. Some signs of a light cleaning, nothing severe, however due to this and the planchet flaw, this coin will not certify in a "clean" holder if submitted. Unfortunate, as otherwise in my experience with the series it would likely have come back in the AU-53 to AU-55 range, making it a rare bird indeed. I would not normally list such a “problem” coin on my site, however the rarity makes it something for consideration. I do not necessarily see the point in bothering to certify the coin as I believe this coin belongs in an album page. However, if submitted I will guarantee a certification of AU Details, and of course the coin is guaranteed to be genuine. If the issue of certification is a concern, you can contact me about my extended return privilege for certification.
