1934-S Peace Dollar, Almost Uncirculated, Original & Problem Free, RARE
Certified in an old second-generation PCI holder. Extremely conservative grade as was typical of PCI in this stage of their business – this coin today would recertify at least AU-53, possibly AU-55, at PCGS or NGC. Too bad CAC does not accept PCI (or ANACS) holders as I am confident that this would probably get a Gold Bean. Better yet this appears original, which is frankly quite scarce in AU-50 to 55 grades, as most survivors seem to have been cleaned – a point which is conveniently ignored by the grading services due to the demand for the date. If you doubt me, take a look at the coins shown in PCGS CoinFacts, where most coins in AU-50/53 are dull and lifeless from obvious “processing”, or show odd or unattractive toning which someone did not bother to remove, usually to hide a problem underneath. This coin is also well struck for the date, with 90% of the feather detail on the Eagle. As to price, it is based upon the equivalent of a CAC-stickered AU-50/53 coin, as confident as I am with the outcome of a regrading effort. As to why I don’t try myself, the answer is cost and time, not to mention the extremely difficulty of even getting CAC to LOOK at a coin in mid-2023. As acquiring a coin like this out of any dealer worth his/her salt is difficult at typical posted AU levels, by the time you add on grading and CAC fees, plus the close to six months it would take, not much meat left on the bone for me. I also like “old holders” and loath destroying what I consider a piece of history. As I naturally understand the reticence of 90-95% of potential buyers to accept my opinion at face value and pay the premium asked, I will offer this guarantee: if submitted for regrading and it does NOT certify higher, I will purchase the coin back and pay all the fees & shipping (provided it has not been “conserved” in the attempt).
