A very tough coin in this grade range, due to typically poor strikes - this example is better than most. Noted by Lawrence as usually struck weakly in the central Reverse area, or with Obverse depressions due to something on the dies. A solid R-4 in this grade. As usual, this coin was cleaned in the past leaving some hairlines, however most of the luster survived that was on the coin when cleaned, and the color has largely recovered. Whether this would certify is less than 50-50, but I don’t feel that is particularly necessary. I will note that the last PCGS AU-50 to sell at auction appears to also have been cleaned, and is currently being offered at $425 by a major “brand name” (March, 2020), versus a PCGS “retail” of $300. Such is the premium commanded by certified examples.
