1937-D Buffalo Nickel, 3 Legs, Original Almost Uncirculated Example

$710.00

(Sold on ebay December, 2019. Tough to do for a raw example of this commonly counterfeited variety, but an example of my consistently conservative grading. Unlike many dealers, I do not get very many returns, for any reason) An example of the famous and ever popular “3 Legged Buffalo”. The most familiar of the abraded die varieties in the series, and the first to be found although a number of others are now known. These by definition never seem that nice given the missing detail which is the hallmark of the variety, however this coin is struck better than most. Equivalent to what I see in certified AU-50 holders, this is original but shows a couple of light scuffs/scratches on the Reverse. Not too surprising considering that it came out of a non-numismatic accumulation, but a worthwhile addition to someone’s collection if they are not worried about a coin entombed in plastic. Guaranteed genuine of course, in perpetuity. I have also added a couple of extra enlarged images of the primary die markers that are used to authenticate this coin. While it is easy for “fakers” to remove the portion of the Bison’s hoof that gives the variety it’s name, the other markers are basically impossible to duplicate. The most commonly noted are the “cloud” of slightly raised lumps under the Bison’s belly leading down to the ground, as well as the “moth eaten” back right leg. Not commonly mentioned however are a couple of specific markers on the Obverse - a smallish rough patch on the back side of the Native’s neck, as well as a line of roughness down the hollow of his cheek/jaw. That and general signs of die erosion lines in other areas of the Obverse should actually be the first thing you look for, as they will show up even in low grade specimens. Given the very minor defects on the Reverse, offered at about the Wholesale level for an AU-50.
