1933-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar, PCGS AU-55, Scarce

1933-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar, PCGS AU-55, Scarce

$449.00

A sharp flashy example and close to Uncirculated, scarce as such. This seems conservatively graded, as 80-90% of the original luster remains. PCGS has turned tougher again at the end of 2020. A perfect example of commercialism in the coin market, as this was lightly cleaned at some point, likely simply by dipping to remove toning, in order to appear “Unc” to the untrained eye. An unfortunate practice, but common as both the grading services and, unfortunately, many collectors seem to prefer their coins “shiny”. From the coin dealer’s perspective, this practice makes obvious sense, at least to those who prefer making money over being honest, as “conserving” a coin like this increases its Wholesale value 50% or more, if you can “bury” the next guy. I know a dealer who has owned three similar coins for three or more years, trying to sell them as “MS-63”. Worth a reasonable premium I think over the average AU-55, most of whom tend to look a bit scruffy. Cracked out, I am sure the average dealer would call this coin an AU-58.
