1859-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar, PCGS AU-50, Scarce
1859-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar, PCGS AU-50, Scarce
WB-102, Medium Mintmark. An attractive example of this date, which is very much a "sleeper". Wiley & Buggert note this is only slightly more available (R-4+) than the 1858-S. Certainly a nice looking coin overall, although not absolutely perfect. It shows some light, very old scratches on the Obverse consistent with commercial use, which are accounted for in the assigned PCGS grade. The point can be made that this is slightly undergraded from the technical surface preservation standpoint, compared to several other PCGS AU-50 coins I compared it to in the historical record, many of which were not even close to original. I will note a recent auction sale (Jan. 2019) at $900 for a coin that: a) had obviously been cleaned, remaining too bright, b) had surface scratches somewhat lighter but more distracting than the present example, and c) certainly had less eye appeal overall. That should make my asking price reasonable for someone.
