1871 Liberty Seated Dollar, Extremely Fine+, Nice Original Type Coin
One of the few common dates in the Liberty Seated Dollar series, but that has to be placed in perspective. Barely more than 1 Million struck, with PCGS CoinFacts suggesting a survival of only 3,000 coins. By the standards of the series, that is “common”, or to use a better term, “available”. Details equivalent to a certified AU coin, however perhaps a bit dark to garner that grade if submitted, since they tend to like their AU coin “shiny”, stupidly enough. This appears original and problem free - if it has been cleaned at any point, it would have to have been early in the last Century! The color however suggests that this was one of the early 1960’s Treasury Hoard coins, Q. David Bowers mentioning the “light brown-gray toning” of the pieces he and Ray Merena sorted through at the time, in his Encyclopedia on Dollars. Sold at the equivalent of an EF-45, this should prove worthy of consideration for a high grade U. S. Type Set.
