1920-D Standing Liberty Quarter, Choice Almost Uncirculated FULL HEAD – RARE

1920-D Standing Liberty Quarter, Choice Almost Uncirculated FULL HEAD – RARE

$1,200.00

(Sold Spring 2022 to a dealer for $1,200) Amazingly well struck for the date with a Full Head, and RARE as such. An attractive looking coin out of a very old set, with smoky light grey toning with red undertones on the Obverse, darker on the Reverse with some "stripes" as this came out of a very old Whitman folder. Here is the BUT: unfortunately, this was lightly cleaned a very long time ago, leaving some visible hairlines on the Obverse, otherwise it would already be in a PCGS holder. Unlikely to certify in a clean holder, so I did not bother to try, since I know it is genuine. In my opinion, this was an Uncirculated coin prior to the light abuse, or it saw no more than a week or two in circulation - no flat spot down Liberty's right leg as usual (like you will find on 90% of all certified AU/Unc coins), and the luster is obvious. This may not have seen anything worse than a "wipe" with a cloth, while in an old time coin board. Obviously, not worth what a totally unimpaired certified specimen would be, but then there are extremely few uncertified coins that look anything like this. For someone who wants a superior looking coin for a raw set, and can deal with the mild impairment, which frankly you have to look for with a 5 power glass (unless you have the eyes of a ten year old), this coin bears consideration. Sold with an absolute guarantee of authenticity, and with my normal return privilege. For reference, a PCGS-certified AU-58FH is about a $1800 coin; if you consider it an “Unc”, then more like $2500.
