1865 Two Cent Piece, Plain 5, Repunched Date, PCGS/CAC MS-64RB
Triple Repunched Date, KF-P7-TPD, the diagnostic die cracks at the date and elsewhere are obvious. . The Plain 5 date logotype is a tougher variety than the more commonly seen “Fancy” 5; how much tougher is hard to tell exactly as the majority of coins certified are not identified as to logotype. Of those so identified, the Plain 5 is about half of the number of Uncirculated coins as the Fancy 5, although all of these coins are only about 10% of the total certified at PCGS. Until fairly recently, the difference did not seem to matter to most people, however with the increase in interest in varieties, this may be changing. Regardless, a nice original coin that stands on its own merits', with a helpful confirmation from CAC. Typical of most of the Uncirculated survivors, minor signs of handling accounted for the relatively small amount of darkening on the surface. There is a HUGE variance between the amount of Red vs. Brown on many coins certified RB - this is on the upper end of the scale. The CAC Population is also low, at about 10% of all 1865’s at PCGS/NGC (again, not broken down as to Fancy vs. Plain 5). This coin is also close to the Condition Census for the Plain 5 variety at PCGS (as an attributed coin), with only 10 coins finer and approx. 8 other coins in the same grade. As a recognized variety (although not in Cherrypickers or recognized by PCGS/NGC) scarcer still, and with the CAC sticker likely certainly among the finest known. Pricing as such is a bit difficult and based upon what my research came up with - potential purchasers with a differing view are welcome to email me with alternate suggestions.
