1861 Three Cent Silver, PCGS/CAC MS-63, HEAVY Obverse Die Clash
1861 Three Cent Silver, PCGS/CAC MS-63, HEAVY Obverse Die Clash
An attractive original coin, obviously put away at the start of the Civil War. Certified PCGS MS-63 in an older 1990’s holder, with a fresh CAC sticker (Feb. 2020). VERY heavy Obverse die clashes, among the heaviest I have seen in the series. Some signs of clashing on the Reverse as well. Perhaps oddly enough, this date is NOT known for clashed dies, PCGS CoinFacts noting that it is unusual to find 1861’s like this. This is likely due to the relatively low mintage not stressing the Mint’s capacity, or the likelihood that this early in the conflict, the Mint had not lost the most experienced press and die men to the Army. Either way, a decent BU coin for Type, or for someone who studies the series and it’s eccentricities.
