1839 Braided Hair Large Cent, Head of 1939, PCGS XF-40
A nice original problem free EF coin, and undervalued. One estimate has a total survival of only about 2,000 coins, and PCGS has certified less than 200 coins, with 44 being less than EF-40. I will note that most survivors seen are impaired, due to heavy use during a critical time in the U. S. economy, so are not gradable. A comment here regarding values with or without a CAC sticker. There is NO premium shown for coins with a CAC sticker, including in Uncirculated grades - try that discussion with specialists in the Early Copper field and see how far it gets you. Auction results and sales from specialists clearly dispute this. As an example, even though it has been awhile, an NGC MS-63, which was Net EAC AU-50, sold for $1265 in a Heritage sale - the current PCGS full retail for AU-50 is $425. This may be considered an outlier, however attractive problem free coins will always command a premium with the knowledgeable buyer. Currently, as of July 2020, a specialist in the series is offering a PCGS XF-45 coin of the most common variety for 25% over PCGS “retail” - and that coin while solid for the grade does NOT have particularly attractive surfaces.
