1837 Half Cent Token, HT-73, Private Convenience Issue
Half Cent denominated Hard Times token, HT-73, struck “for public convenience” in 1837 as the U. S. Mint had temporarily ceased production of the denomination. Popularly collected along with the U. S. Federal series, as well as part of the “Hard Times” series. Almost Uncirculated, details at the center of the Obverse a bit weak due to strike, however otherwise matches other certified AU specimens I reviewed. An old cleaning so probably would not certify today other than a “Net” grade - while some luster is evident, the color is a bit off. Regardless, a popular Redbook variety. Always a bit difficult to value & price - Rulau (an old reference) lists this at $150 EF, $400 in Unc. Recent auctions sales (late 2020) of $299 in AU-50 and $360 in AU-53. This example priced lower for the old cleaning, less than ideal strike and a few light scuffs, however it still should be of interest to someone.
