1832 Classic Head Half Cent, C-1, Rev. of 1831, Original AU-58
1832 Classic Head Half Cent, C-1, Rev. of 1831, Original AU-58
A very original example of the first Type of 1832 Half Cent, which used the Reverse Hub of 1831, a better variety. A classic example of a coin that passed very briefly through circulation, just long enough to pick up a small amount of wear in the Obverse fields. Bright, flashy luster remains, with a touch of sea green toning around the rims and in the Reverse field. The tiny dark areas at Stars #5 and 7 is likely from minor finger or moisture contact, almost unavoidable on these pure Copper coins. If submitted for certification, almost certain to grade AU-58, unless the service gets extremely picky and has an issue with the minor spots, calling it “Environmental Damage”. That is not terribly likely, and it is just as possible they might squeeze this into an MS-61 holder, they way they grade Half Cents these days! This variety is definitely better in an Unc holder, but as there is not too much premium for an AU-58 I decided not to bother submitting it (I see actual wear on the coin). My price is based upon an equivalent PCGS AU-58, not attributed as C-1 on the label, that recently sold (Sept. 2019). As a PCGS coin with attribution on the label, only one AU-58, with 7 Uncs in Brown, so perhaps an opportunity for someone here.
