1905-S Barber Half Dollar, Original Uncirculated Coin

$1,055.00

A fully original Uncirculated example of this underrated date, which is rare in any Unc grade, per David Akers and David Lawrence (R-5 in his book on the series). The Obverse of this coin is lovely, with speckled overall toning in the reddish-gray range and hints of green. Here is the “but”: the problem can easily be seen on the Reverse, where the coin shows some dark curving lines. These are stains common to coins from mixed lots of material stored randomly in cans, boxes, etc. - in other words the true source of almost all original period material, which was saved by the general public, not collectors. I can guarantee that if this coin had been saved by a period “collector”, it would have been dipped or otherwise abused sometime in the past, or just as possibly buy a dealer whose hands it passed through during the period when “white” coins were the industry standard. These stains can be removed, however it would also remove the original Obverse color in the process, and I hated to do that. The coin shows some very light, very small marks under the toning, also indicative of a coin from a “can lot”, so I feel this is equivalent to what you will normally see in an MS-61/62 certified holder. Regardless of the relatively minor Reverse issues, a very attractive coin - if you can deal with the bit of odd color, this offers an intriguing value. I will guarantee a certification of at least Unc Details at PCGS or NGC - the Reverse toning would probably result in a “Net” grade, probably for what they call “Environmental Damage”. As I joked one time to someone, “I guess that’s what we used to call toning”.
