A nice original Brown EF example of this slightly underrated date. Right on the cusp between the acknowledged scarcer 1866 to 1872 dates, and the dates from 1874 to 1878 perceived as being more common (other than the 1877 of course). The Open 3 is more available than the Close 3, simply by virtue of the fact that likely more were struck after the change in the date after complaints about the digit looking “too much” like an 8. The Mintages of both varieties were not distinguished by the Mint as far as I know, so all are lumped into the 11.6 Million made for the date. Still, still not a common coin if original and problem free, as this one is. If submitted for grading, this has a better than even shot at coming back an XF-45
