Snow-2, Doubled Die Obverse, showing minor doubling on LIBERTY. This is primarily visible on the L, however easily identified by the “beauty mark” die chip on Liberty’s temple. An original Brown AU example; the variety does not necessarily add to the value, but perhaps of interest to a collector of the various Snow numbers.
History of the Closed 3 versus Open 3 Hub Types: The “3” in the date was altered part way through the production year as some people apparently complained they could not distinguish it from an “8”. At the time, it was common for people outside the major urban areas to be wary of such things in fear of taking a counterfeit, and getting a coin that appeared to be from 5 years in the future would be an issue. The same problem cropped up again later with Capped Bust Half Dollars dated in the 1820’s & 1830’s, that were released for circulation later in the 19th Century. Then the problem was that they were older dates, and many people distrusted them for THAT reason - I guess you cannot please everyone!
