1870 Indian Cent, PCGS/CAC MS-63BN, Doubled Die Reverse, Bold N

$999.00

Snow-24, DDR.  An attractive original Uncirculated coin certified PCGS/CAC MS-63BN - a near twin to another example repatriated from Europe, where they were undoubtedly sequestered since the year of issue. Bright orange-brown surfaces and a very clean Obverse save one small area of marks just to the left of Liberty's mouth. Original and well struck overall, the slightly "mushy" appearance of the wreath, shield and details on "ONE CENT" is a characteristic of the variety due to the pivoted hub doubling which affected those details.  Unfortunately, this Snow number is not recognized by PCGS, so no attribution on the label is currently possible.  A raw example of this same variety stated as being Uncirculated sold on ebay early in 2020 for about $1000.  While that coin was described as Red Brown, I will note that I felt the color might be a bit questionable. In any case it was not a PCGS certified coin, let alone CAC.  For the date (not the variety) a low CAC Population of 10 in the grade, versus 69 in the grade at PCGS, 59 at NGC.  I will note that in my experience CAC does not like most Indian or Lincoln Cents certified Brown. Pricing for the variety is by definition a bit speculative, however this coin certainly stands on its own merits.
