1864 Bronze Indian Cent, Choice Uncirculated
For those who prefer an uncertified coin to place into an album page, this is a nice original Brown Unc example of the first of the French Bronze Small Cents. A little less die wear visible than on the PCGS MS-63 example also being offered (as of Feb. 2020), with no significant marks and otherwise equivalent to the PCGS coin. The small area of lighter color on the Reverse is due to an area with greater Tin content in the planchet, the same reason for the classic “woodgrain” toning seen on many early Bronze Cents - and indeed present on all U. S. Cents into the 1930’s at least. Being a “token”, non-precious metal coinage, the Mint was a bit looser with the quality control of strip & planchet, as well as strike, than it was on Silver or Gold coinage.
