1918/7-D Buffalo Nickel, Scarce Overdate, Choice VG+, PCGS/CAC VG-10, PQ
FS-101, the classic early overdate created due to the demands of hurried Wartime production. Choice Very Good, certified PCGS/CAC VG-10 – and in my own opinion there is a solid argument for this being undergraded, despite the “green bean”. I certified this myself and actually expected it to come back Fine-12, as it shows a full bold date and 2/3 of the Bison’s horn. This date is notoriously mushy due to the general lack of quality of the 1918-D Nickel production overall. Many of the overdates show significant die erosion or other obvious strike issues, and commonly seem to be “net” graded by the Obverse. Two of the last three PCGS Fine-12’s sold (neither CAC) at major auction lacked even half a horn – and still brought full Wholesale prices. Either way this is certainly PQ for the assigned grade. 210 PCGS, an estimated 100+ at NGC (NGC does not distinguish between VG-8 and VG-10 in their Census, helpfully enough …) versus 33 CAC, 1 of which is in their own new slab. Per CAC’s grading policy, guaranteed to cross to their own new holder should you wish to submit it.
