1918-S Buffalo Nickel, PCGS/CAC XF-45, Original Semi Key Date, LOW CAC Pop

$329.00

A lower CAC population: 65 at PCGS, 44 NGC versus only 4 at CAC (April, 2025).  Some of this can be put off to by the relative lack of posted premium in the grade, which would discourage submission to CAC.  However, more is explained by the common overgrading (my opinion) by the major services of this typically poorly struck date.  Almost all 1918-dated Nickels show poor central definition, likely due to adjusting die spacing to save wear and tear on the dies due to the need to mint an excess number of coins to fed the heated Wartime economy.  Some problems may also be linked to a reduction in "QC" at the Mints, as many experienced employees were drafted into the Army to serve in engineering specialties.  This is noted on the present example, as while the dies seem relatively fresh overall, it shows signs of heavy Obverse die clashing, as well as a significant die crack at 9:00.  Otherwise original and well struck overall for the date - I thought that this had a shot at AU-50 when I submitted it.  No examples in the new CACG holder at the grade; per their policy this is guaranteed to cross at the same grade if submitted in situ.
