1912-D Liberty Nickel, Almost Uncirculated, PCGS AU-53, Well Struck
1912-D Liberty Nickel, Almost Uncirculated, PCGS AU-53, Well Struck
An attractive original example of this slightly underrated date, long in the shadow of the 1912-S Nickel. Oddly enough not too many coins at PCGS in AU-50 and 53. Some of that is a lack of interest in submitting a coin of relatively low value, but characteristics of the issue also limit the number of coins that will certify AU or better. Iffy strike is a common issue, as is the tendency for the surfaces of this date to be darker, as apparently planchets were a bit of a problem – most high grade coins seem to be a medium to darker grey. This is a pleasant enough exception and while the Obverse shows some light, general weakness of detail (which is actually a characteristic of all the 1912 Nickel, due to how the master was produced), a razor sharp Reverse by Liberty Nickel standards. Full wreath detail down to the kernels in the ear of corn.
