1866 Shield Nickel, Choice Uncirculated, FS-302 Repunched Date, Rare
1866 Shield Nickel, Choice Uncirculated, FS-302 Repunched Date, Rare
Repunched Date, FS-302 (001.1). Choice Uncirculated (In my opinion), certified by PCGS as Uncirculated Details for 'Environmental Damage'. This is a misnomer and an exceptionally picky determination. The 'damage' is some light surface discoloration at the rim caused by contact with moisture, probably while in a coin album page. This can be seen in the Obverse image provided as the 'whitish' area running from about 5:30 to 7:00 on the Obverse. If you are familiar with the series (or any early Nickel for that matter), this is the area where the surface luster was dulled a bit by moisture. Otherwise, the coin is well struck, fully original and has a surface equivalent to what will normally certify MS-63/64, with minimal marks and good luster. Only 4 attributed coins at PCGS in Mint State (Jan. 2024). The sole PCGS MS-63 sold for $5,000+ in 2017; it was not struck as well as this example and showed some spotting. One of the two AU-53 sold for $2,600+ in 2018, so it is logical that this coin should fall somewhere in between. Given the difficulty of determining a suitable price for a 'details' coin, I have taken a shot however will listen to offers - you can contact me to discuss. Due to value this will require Registered Mail shipping, which is slower delivery time - please take this into account prior to considering a purchase.
