Set of Robert Bashlow Confederate Coinage Restrike Tokens, Rare
Set of Robert Bashlow Confederate Coinage Restrike Tokens, Rare
(SOLD September, 2019) An original 1960’s Era set of six tokens struck by Robert Bashlow, replicas of Confederate States coinage. This contains the three “Confederate Cent” restrikes, struck from transfer dies taken from the original dies owned by John Haseltine in the 1800’s, later cancelled (mutilated). This also holds three “Confederate Half” replicas made from a copy of the Scott Company Confederate Seal Reverse used as the Obverse, and a made-to-order Reverse die produced by the Frank Co. of Philadelphia. Each “coin” type is struck in three metallic compositions, Bronze, Silver and “Goldine”, a proprietary alloy used by Bashlow to make them look like Gold. Very Scarce to Rare as a complete set, many if not most broken up for the constituent pieces, the Cents being more popular over time. Additionally, the presence of a Silver “Half” provided more pressure to break these sets up, as a certified Gem is worth about $1000 on its own. This set is as sold in 1962, in the original Bashlow holder, per personal communication with an individual who was present at the time when Bashlow was selling these and saw these same holders. Condition is Gem Uncirculated overall. My experience is that Bashlow’s Cents will certify as MS-66 on average, absent any spots. The Halves tend to vary more as the Bronze pieces tend to be dull naturally, so sometimes certify lower based upon color, and the Goldine tends to spot or stain, as present on the piece in this set (very minor). Overall, the “breakup value” likely exceeds my asking price, however I felt that this set needed to be kept together for the historical Numismatic value. Images of the individual Reverse sides is available upon request.
