(Sold on ebay August, 2019) Civil War era medallion commemorating the battle at Hampton Roads between the Union Ironclad “Monitor” and the CSS “Merrimac” nee “Virginia”. Famous of course as the first Naval engagement of “modern” non-wooden vessels.  Schenkman MM4, listed in his monograph on the subject. Choice Uncirculated, certified NGC MS-63RB, and in the Condition Census for the token.  2 in the grade at NGC, plus one each MS-64 and MS-65RB.  PCGS shows 2 each MS-64 and 65RB. There is also one anomalous NGC piece in MS-62 Prooflike, ex-Schenkman’s reference collection, not reported in the NGC census for some reason.  Either way, one of the best Dozen certified, counting all of the above mentioned.  Possibly would have graded a point higher other than the minor darkening at center on the Obverse, undoubtedly from finger contact. The Reverse is “Gemmy”, with attractive light toning.  This shows considerable hints of light contrast between fields and relief.  Somewhat difficult to price due to limited trades, so my asking price is speculative and I encourage “suggestions” in the alternative.
