HK-876, Denver Mint Opening, Choice Almost Uncirculated
Struck as a souvenir to mark the opening of the Denver Mint in 1905, and as a test of the large press intended to strike $20 Double Eagles. On a similarly sized planchet to a $20, in Bronze rather than Gold naturally. Long popular as a Mint-struck medal and collected by fans of U. S. Gold as well as part of the SCD series. This increased demand means these tend to be relatively scarce on the market, sell relatively quickly if nice (as this example is) and also tend to perhaps a bit spendier than their survival would indicate. This example is a NICE original piece, well struck for the issue with a smooth mark free surface (the thin "lines" visible are on the outside of the slab surface) and some touches of original planchet color remaining. Pricing is difficult, as few comparable pieces have sold at auction that I can find, certainly not recently. After purchasing the NGC MS-62 example also being offered here, I seriously considered resubmitting this piece as I thought it potentially undergraded, based upon the surfaces of the other. However, I decided to demure - definitely a PQ example in any case.
