HK-870, Century of Progress Colorado Dollar, Type 4, NGC MS-67, Great Color!
HK-870, Colorado Dollar Type IV, from the 1933/34 Century of Progress Exposition at Chicago. Superb Gem Uncirculated, certified NGC MS-67. Tied for the Top Pop with six other examples, although I doubt many if any have the overall eye appeal of this example. The Obverse is an overall light blue-grey with red-yellow highlights out at the rims. The Reverse is a monster, with a bright yellow-red center progressing to darker orange-red, with electric blue rims. My images are accurate but don't really do the piece justice. I was able to trace transactions for four of the other 6 examples. Heritage sold two examples, cert #2166838-001 and #2204629-007 Sept. 2007 at $374 each. The first of those two (-001) sold again August 2020 on ebay at $395, stupid cheap. Heritage sold cert #2595193-001 Nov. 2015 at $353; reholdered with a Bruce Thomas pedigree, it sold on ebay October, 2022 at $765. Bruce's was the nicest of the three mentioned but showed somewhat uneven toning overall, seemingly typical of toned examples. Most recently, Heritage sold cert #3731571-003, also nicely toned but again somewhat uneven overall, at $1,260. That owner is actively pursuing offers through Heritage, and has turned down three offers over $2,200, the last at $2,575 (Feb. 2023)! Given all that, and accepting that results at Heritage might be subject to the oddities of their client list, I can't ignore at this might be worth North of $2,500. So I am throwing this out there with a stupid "pretty premium" number and will consider offers; just be polite please. I am not an idiot, nor am I ignorant of what the market says this “should” be worth. However, I am in no rush to dispense with this, and once sold its gone …
