HK-419, Baroque Shield Dollar, 1915 Panama-Pacific Expo, NGC MS-64, TOP POP
HK-419, SH 18-22 CU Long Tail. Baroque Shield Dollar as per H-K, from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. More properly this should be called the Nebraska State Fund Dollar, as the State Seal is the design used on the Reverse; this has been corrected in Shevlin's new reference. Choice Uncirculated, certified as NGC MS-64BN, listed in the NGC Census as the Top Pop in BN. However, it is my considered opinion as a 30 year collector (as well as a certifier of SCD for almost as long) of PPIE tokens & medals that this should have come back Red Brown (RB). I have had other experts in this area agree with this opinion. MS-64RB would make it tied for the absolute finest certified, with one other piece. NGC has recent changed it's grader of tokens & medals and I believe this reflects the relative lack of experience with SCD compared to the prior staff. Probably worthy of a resubmission in future. You can compare this example to the NGC MS-63BN I also have listed, to compare color. Either way, difficult and at present "impossible" to find better. The total Uncirculated Pop is 11 in BN, 4 in RB, one of the MS-63BN being a duplicate as I resubmitted a piece and never bothered to have the cert# deleted. Rated R-6 in Shevlin, which might describe the overall availability, however more like R-7 as an Unc. Certainly you can't easily find one when you want one, and few are as "fresh" and original as this piece - and I have seen a fair number of them as this has been one of my "unicorns" in the HK series over the years. Out of a very old collection where it sat undisturbed for a half century or more.
