HK-382, 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration, ANACS Proof-62 DCAM, NO HOLE
HK-382, a souvenir of the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration at New York. Certified by ANACS as a Proof-62 DCAM. NGC does not show any examples attributed as a Proof in the current Census, so my presumption is that if resubmitted to them it would likely certify as a Deep Prooflike Unc. Almost all examples of this design I have seen certified have a hole at the top edge, for suspension from a ribbon badge. However, a number of Hudson-Fulton pieces were issued in a case as a commemoration of a specific date during the Celebration. I once owned a medal with a case dated September 29, 1909 from this event, related I seem to remember to something having to do with the Celebration organization. The lack of a hole on this piece as well as the surfaces suggests that this might have been issued in a similar fashion, so its attribution as a Proof striking (i. e. struck more like a Medal than a souvenir SCD) might have some validity. Regardless, a scarce piece with only 12 in Unc grades at NGC. The numerical grade in this case is slightly limited by the obvious spotting, as otherwise I could see this in a 64 holder. An interesting research project for someone.
