1936 Mexico Mint 400th Anniversary, Silver, Gem BU NGC MS-66, RARE
Medal struck in 1936 to celebrate the fourth Century of operation of the Mint in Mexico City, D.F. Grove 490a, in Silver, original reported mintage of 1,089. A stunning, original Gem Uncirculated piece, certified NGC MS-66, tied with two others for the finest certified, with none higher. Attractive bright original surfaces with light toning highlights. I have included additional images taken prior to certification as they show the surfaces better than those taken of the medal in the slab. Only 7 total certified at NGC - this versus Grove 490b (Bronze) which shows seven pieces certified from a mintage of half as large. This suggests that there may have been a loss of a certain portion of the Mintage due melting for the Silver content, as typically a Silver medal would be certified before one in Bronze. Regardless, tough to imagine finding a more attractive and original piece. Difficult to price as there are few U. S. trades to go by, as well as the "replaceability" factor. Much is based upon the sale on ebay of the sole other MS-66 last year, for a comparable sum.
