1842 Seated Liberty Dollar, Almost Uncirculated+, Lightly Prooflike
1842 Seated Liberty Dollar, Almost Uncirculated+, Lightly Prooflike
This shows lightly Prooflike surfaces due to the dies being repolished. There is a low "bulge" in the field right behind Liberty's right hand, just visible in my images, which may be the culprit. Not likely to be a die clash but possible due to other damage due to material entering the coining chamber. The result of the polishing removed some detail, most noticeable as weakness on the shield/Eagle's neck on the Reverse. There are also some very light planchet lines (roller marks) across Liberty's body, likely due to a reduction in striking pressure to extend the life of an already damaged die. I see what may be some light evidence of rust on the Obverse die, which suggests a die that had been put aside as damaged was reworked to finish out the year's production. Lightly cleaned as almost always seen, however it was a long time ago. The cleaning is made a bit more obvious by the reflective surfaces, however obvious luster remains in protected areas. Some Obverse scratches should be obvious in my images. Overall detail based on actual wear is that of a mid-grade AU coin; priced along the lines of an AU-53, with a little something extra for the unusual surfaces. Certainly still suitable as a high grade Type example, and far better than the typical scrubbed out, screwed up "AU" coins I see offered by many "dealers". Guaranteed genuine backed by our firms 80+ years in the business, plus all the industry "garden salad" (PCGS, CAC, NGC, ANACS, ANA, etc., etc.).
