I would assume almost certain to have been VERY light cleaned a long, long time ago, since 95%+ of all early Barber Quarters seem to have been. However the color appears natural now and I would call it problem free by the accepted standard - the grading services would not have a problem with it. No noticeable hairlines and nice color, a medium gray with reddish undertones. I have always found it a bit odd that the 1894-S Quarter and Half Dollar are both reasonably common, in terms of early Barber coinage, while the 1894-S Dime is of course not (perhaps a bit of an understatement …). I wonder if that is the result of some extra hoarding by the non-collecting public of the date, simply as they may have noticed that they did not see any Dimes of that date, and assumed the Quarter and Half were going to be “rare”. As usual, this means of course that they turn out not to be … just food for thought.
