1888-S Liberty Seated Quarter, Uncirculated
1888-S Liberty Seated Quarter, Uncirculated
The only San Francisco Mint Quarter struck between 1878 and 1891, most likely due to the massive production of Morgan Dollars during this period occupying the Mint forces otherwise. Considered a relatively common date, however not in better grades; this is an R-3 to R-4 in Larry Brigg’s text on the series, a bit dated now but still the authority on the subject. This coin was obviously put away in the year of issue, likely as a “new” Quarter had not been seen in a Decade by the original owner. Like virtually all such coins, this was undoubtedly stored in a less than ideal manner, as the color suggests. It shows some very light “hairlines”, however determining whether this was from an exceptionally light cleaning, such as a “wipe” with a cloth, or from general scuffing about while in storage, is a judgement call. I am calling this Uncirculated as there does not appear to be any wear in the fields. It does show the typical high point friction acquired by a coin stored randomly without surface protection, so whether a grading service would call this Mint State is somewhat open to question. However, my experience is that something in the MS-61 to MS-62 range is not out of the question. In any case, a sharp and not unattractive example, perfect as a Type coin if nothing else. Priced simply based upon my cost and a desired markup - the observer can make up their own mind about the matter. Either way I think it offers good value, compared to the typical ugly, scrubbed or processed survivor I typically see.
