1920-D Buffalo Nickel, Choice Almost Uncirculated, PCGS AU-58, Rare

$632.00

A rare, truly original example of this slightly underrated date. Well struck and attractive, unlike many in the AU to low end Unc grade range, I was frankly shocked that this did not come back in a Mint State holder! I have certainly seen worse in MS-62 slabs; another indication that PCGS has tightened up considerably in 2019. There is a strong discontinuity between posted values for this date, and what they actually bring at auction or direct sale. While “wholesale” is around $400, and PCGS “retail” is $575, auction results have been commonly higher, with a couple of examples less attractive than this one (my opinion of course) bringing $840 & $960 respectively. And those were NON CAC coins; you can check PCGS CoinFacts for images. Those prices are more in line with MS-62+ coins, which may say something more about demand than PCGS grading. Regardless, this is definitely a superior example in the grade - you can also compare this to the PCGS MS-62 example I have available. I think this AU-58 coins is not only struck a bit better on the Reverse, it may offer a better value. Interestingly enough, both coins have a small rim “cud” in the same location, at 10:00 on the Obverse.
