1914-S Buffalo Nickel, Original AU/Unc "Slider" (AU-58)
1914-S Buffalo Nickel, Original AU/Unc "Slider" (AU-58)
A very attractive, fully original AU/Unc example of the second year in the series from San Francisco. For some odd reason, this date has virtually no difference in values between AU-55 and MS-61, at least on the Wholesale level. I suspect that this is due to a larger degree of hoarding locally early in 1914 as a result of the excitement over the 1913-S Type 2 Nickel. I have found it an almost certainty that public hoarding increased the year immediately following a low mintage Key Date, on the assumption that that date would be scarce as well (translation = “worth more”). In any case, this coin served in commerce perhaps no more than a month, with the result being the tiniest bit of “rub” on the point of the Native’s cheekbone, and the Bison’s hipbones and horn. The wear is largely visible as small areas of color slightly lighter than the overall gray-green surfaces. Guaranteed to certify as an AU-58 if submitted, or perhaps higher as they sometimes award a “mulligan” for originality and call a coin like this MS-61 or 62. Mox Nix - if you want an original specimen at the true AU-58 level for a grading example, this would be an excellent choice. And, its a pretty nice looking Buffalo Nickel to boot!
