1877 Indian Cent, Choice Almost Uncirculated, PCGS AU-55
1877 Indian Cent, Choice Almost Uncirculated, PCGS AU-55
(SOLD January, 2020 for $3200) A stunningly original Choice AU example of this classic Key Date. Virtually no wear, I had crossed my fingers hoping this might come back AU-58. As PCGS has definitely tightened up recently, likely the issue was it was not “shiny” enough. Medium Chocolate Brown surfaces with hints of original planchet color remaining in protected areas on the Reverse. New to the PCGS Population and likely to the overall market, as this came out of an old Washington State accumulation, rather than a collector’s set. Regardless of the source, if you want an attractive, original coin for your set, this should fit the bill. I think I can safely guarantee that this would garner a CAC sticker if submitted, which I might do later if it survives in inventory past January. This appears to be from Die Pair #2 (Snow-2), with the classic die clash from Liberty’s neck showing at the top of the Reverse. This die pair also produced better struck coins than Die Pair #1 (S-1), and other than a tiny bit of weakness at the very tips of the feathers on Liberty’s bonnet, the strike is strong and well balanced. For reference, these have been consistently bringing $3,000 - $3,100 at auction of late, and in my opinion many of those coins have not been as attractive (or as original). CAC “retail” is $3,380, but most coins noted for sale on ebay, as an example, are priced at a Net to the seller of about $3450. I certainly found other coins priced higher than that, listed by specialists in the series. Given all that, I think my asking price reasonable - the price shown is for payment with PayPal. Please remember my 5% “cash” discount for payment by check; contact me directly for payment details.
