1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet

$1,800.00

(Sold November, 2019) Noe-17, Breen-62, Salmon 3-B, etc. Slightly out of round, 24mm by 21mm, weight just about 4 Grams (I did not have a functional scale to get it to the nth degree), so presumably clipped or sweated a bit. Visible details in the range of a Fine, unevenly struck as are many, however the date, value and much of the Reverse legend are clear ("New England" side). The heavily recut "H" and other diagnostics of Noe 17 are plainly visible. The surfaces seem original, or at least not cleaned in the last two Centuries. No signs of a bend, damage or corrosion, so not ground recovered as are many specimens. A series of fine scratches inscribed on the Reverse, which are obviously intentional and applied with a very sharp knife edge. They also appear to be extremely old, possibly close to period. I do not believe any association with the whole "Salem Witch thing", however it is possibly a political comment of some sort, possibly during the Revolutionary War period (angry Tory of some kind??). Regardless of the relatively minor defects, compared to many, an overall attractive specimen. The minor "issues" make this an affordable example, which came out of a very old Northwest accumulation, and which has been off the market for a long time. Authenticity is guaranteed in perpetuity.
