WB-103, Broken S. Certified PCGS AU Details for an old cleaning. I think PCGS missed the assigned grade on this one just a tick, as I can detect no wear other than the extremely small amount of metal removed by the light cleaning. Submitted to PCGS, frankly, in hopes that they would call it Unc Details - it is that close. Very likely out of the Central American hoard of Civil War-era San Francisco Mint dates mentioned in Breen, almost all of which that appear on the market show cleaning. The cleaning was light leaving some hairlines, and some uneven color overall. The luster on this is obvious and nearly complete but somewhat impaired by the cleaning, which appears to have been to attempt to remove darker toning, typical of the hoard coins. NO corrosion, and a decent looking coin when viewed in person - nicer than my images make it appear. Conservation might very well improve this coin quite a bit if attempted. Some images of the coin taken prior to submission to PCGS are also included. Regardless of the problem surfaces, a super tough coin to find in this grade, and normally a $1500+ coin in mid-grade AU and above. If you want a high grade specimen that looks decent but will not break the bank, this could be for you.
