1853-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar, Arrows & Rays, PCGS XF-40
A nice original example of this popular Type date, of whom I see relatively few available. Some of this may be the “West Coast Effect”, as these coins certainly did not circulate out here, but definitely scarcer than its stable mate from Philadelphia. PCGS CoinFacts estimates a survival of about 1,500 coins versus 6,000 for the 1853-P. Given that these numbers must be taken with a large grain of salt, I don’t understand how that translates to the concept that this is a “common” date. It is certainly not so when looking like this example, as most seem to have been cleaned to try to “improve” them. It also appears solid for the grade, with remaining luster in protected areas.
