1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar, Overton-106a, Scarce Variety

$475.00

An original mid-grade example of this scarcer variety. Rated R-5 in the 3rd edition of Overton, the more recent “Top 100” update text shows this downgraded to an R-4, however still important enough to be separately listed as a variety in retail price guides. The “a” after the Overton number indicates a sub-variety, which are commonly distinguished by die state. These are somewhat less actively pursued than the “whole number”, unless spectacularly rare. The distinguishing feature of this variety is the single leaf on the upper olive branch on the Reverse under the Eagle’s left (facing) wing. The key to distinguishing the Obverse is the so-called “comet” die crack behind Liberty’s head. By the nature of the later die state, overall details are a bit mushy and softer looking overall, however this coin sits solidly in the middle Very Fine grade range VF-25 to 30). A few minor marks do not seriously detract, but might prevent this coin from certifying in a normal holder. Regardless, for someone looking for a nice looking example, this should fit the bill without breaking the bank.
