(Sold on ebay May, 2022) An attractive original Choice BU example of this popular date. Certified MS-64 in the original GSA hard case, with box and COA, holder as sold by the U. S. Treasury in the 1970’s/80’s. This coin originally came out of the "Misc." GSA category for a minor amount of Reverse toning, so sold without a numbered card. Nicer than the typical ‘85-CC GSA encountered today; most remaining in a GSA holder today tend to be on the lower end of the MS scale. As the majority of the original Mintage (65%) was released through the GSA sales, and GSA coins were de facto almost the only way to find a BU example at the time, many premium examples were cracked out between 1975 and the early 1990’s. This was especially true after the beginning of commercial third party grading in the 1980’s, as there was virtually no premium for a GSA coin versus a PCGS or NGC coin. This is an example of VAM-3, the “tilted CC” variety - just mentioned for interest sake as their is no real premium for an 1885-CC VAM.
