1923-S Mercury Dime, PCGS/CAC AU-58, Very Scarce Original Coin - FULL Bands
Well struck and in my opinion Full Bands. I am not sure that PCGS still acknowledges FB coins below MS-60; more on this topic below. VERY scarce, as virtually all of the true AU-58 survivors seem to have been cleaned at one point or another, to try to make an “Unc” out of them. I was lucky to have found a tiny group of four original AU coins, saved almost certainly at random by a member of the general public, and obviously put away immediately in the year of issue. One of these is also offered on this site as a raw coin, the other three certified AU-58; the best two I had hoped would come back Mint State, they are that close. This is perhaps the better of the two CAC AU-58’s offered here, however that is just my opinion. 127 certified PCGS/NGC combined, versus only 7 at CAC, TWO of which are listed on this site. The PCGS Pop shows one coin in 58FB, NGC shows 11 (I have my doubts about that number actually existing). The one PCGS coin shown on CoinFacts, while actually FB, is not so shown on the label, so my guess is it is not that “1” coin. Either way, not a lot around and stupidly undervalued. I definitely want a premium on this item as outside this holder I am positive that many dealers would sell it as “Choice Unc FB”, especially on ebay. Nuff said … FYI, Heritage shows one PCGS AU-58 CAC sale. That coin sold in 2012, so it was a very early CAC coin, and went for $299. Frankly, BOTH the examples offered here run rings around that other coin, which while it meets the commercial standard for an AU-58, was not particularly attractive.
