Struck privately in 1837 after the temporary cessation of the standard U. S. Half Cent, not struck from 1836 through 1848, due to demand during the “Hard Times” period. The only Half Cent-denominated issue listed in the Hard Times token series, and popularly collected along with either those or the U. S. Half Cent. Listed in the Guide to U. S. Coins (aka the “Redbook’). Choice Extremely Fine or a bit better, with claims to an AU grade if submitted for certification. There is no specific standard for grading these, so it is largely based upon surface. This has detail equivalent to some PCGS certified AU-50 tokens I reviewed, but the surfaces lack enough “pizzaz” perhaps. Either way, an attractive problem free example of this iconic, unusual emergency coin/token issue.
