1925 Norse American Centennial, Thick Planchet, PCGS/CAC MS-64

1925 Norse American Centennial, Thick Planchet, PCGS/CAC MS-64

$399.00

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the arrival of the ship Restauration to American shores, which carried Norwegian immigrants, many of whom settled in Minnesota. It also honors the presumed date of the first Norse contact in North America in 1000 AD, when explorers from Greenland under Leif Erickson founded a small settlement in what is now Newfoundland. A bit thin perhaps, but it came at the height of the commemorative craze that ended in the mid 1930’s. As Congress had approved four other coin programs for 1925, the sponsor chose a commemorative medal, which he figured would squeak through easier. Although technically a medal, commonly collected along with the Commemorative Half Dollar series. Struck on two types of Silver planchets, thick & thin (along with a rare Gold issue) - thick is the more commonly encountered. As more of a souvenir issue than many of the Half Dollars of the period, many of these were immediately mishandled, and even more cleaned (more than once). This is an attractive, original piece showing moderate red-grey toning. CAC approved - while not as commonly sent to them as might be a Commem Half, still a low percentage with a “green bean”. Almost 1000 certified by PCGS & NGC, while only 65 at CAC (July, 2020).
