1934-D Heavy Motto Washington Quarter, PCGS MS-65, Small D Mintmark, Rare

1934-D Heavy Motto Washington Quarter, PCGS MS-65, Small D Mintmark, Rare

$579.00

I believe that this is a Small D Mintmark, the general Type listed as FS-501, the Reverse die apparently being used with three different Obverse Hubs. Both PCGS & NGC will certify it as a recognized, separate variety. The much enlarged image of the qualifying Mintmark is courtesy of NGC VarietyPlus. As this Mintmark punch degraded, it apparently filled as as on the specimen offered here; this feature is also shown in the Cherrypickers image of the variety. I have also included an image of another '34-D Heavy Motto coin for comparison (not included in this listing) that is clearly NOT a Small D. You can make up your own mind about it either way - the coin stands on it's own merits as a Key Date. PCGS current attributed Pop of 2 in MS-65, 2 in MS-66. As this was in an older holder that matched the group of Key Date Washington's in came out of, I did not want to resubmit it for attribution and lose the label. The last PCGS auction sale was at $600+, although it has been awhile - either way, my asking price does not seem too far out of line for the quality of the coin. Out of a very old set, generally very clean, a couple small marks in the Obverse field and one on Washington's forehead are the only noticeable minor defects. Unquestionably original, with light golden yellow toning and some splashes of blue and russet toning near the rim.
