Now THIS is what an original Uncirculated early Walking Liberty Half is supposed to look like … which explains why 95%+ do not look like this. A coin like this could only have been put away, likely just by chance, during the First World War. As there were damned few collectors of “modern” U. S. coins at the time, most likely this was just saved as a souvenir of the new Half design. Later, when coins like this were processed through coin dealers starting in the 1930’s/40’s, almost inevitably they were cleaned to remove toning. At the time, almost everyone in the general, mass collecting market preferred their coins “white”. Matters certainly did not improve into the 1970’s, when coin “investing” took off, and the tendency was to clean everything AU and above to make it “shiny” in order to try to sell it as an “investment grade” coin, i. e. Choice BU or better. Thankfully, this coin managed to avoid that fate. Not for everyone to be sure, but if you want an example of an original, naturally toned early Walker, this is it. The toning on the Reverse is less than ideal, being a bit deep, but it does not completely hide the luster. It is actually a bit brighter and with more bright red than I could capture. As noted, it has become almost inevitable that coins that have remained like this for a Century will be “conserved” today, as many people are afraid of toning - they seem to expect all ”BU” coins to look like the vast legion of white, untoned Morgan Dollars that exist. Those coins however are the notable exception to the rule that Silver coins tone over time, and are the result of near-hermetically sealed bag storage in U. S. Treasury vaults. If “conserved”, I would expect this coin to certify in the MS-62 range. I prefer however to leave it in its natural state for someone who can appreciate it for what it is.
