1886 Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Rare Low Mintage Date, High Grade Circ

$1,159.00

A rare, very low mintage date. 5,000 struck, one estimate of perhaps 1,000 survivors; PCGS has seen perhaps 200 coins. Details of Almost Uncirculated, cleaned a bit harshly in the past. Some colorful retoning around the rims however most of the coin remains bright. Difficult to be 100% sure whether this is an impaired Proof, however I reviewed a number of certified Unc & Proof examples and believe this to be a Business strike. The dies bear signs of repolishing, especially on the Reverse, more likely for a Proof die reused to strike the small number of Business strikes, as with only 886 Proofs struck I doubt that the dies would have a chance to wear out while used for that purpose. Also, the visible surfaces inside the stripes of the Shield appear to be more like a Mint State coin that a Proof, as they are satiny looking rather than polished. Overall, the fine details just do not appear "Proofy" to me. Observers will have to make up their own mind about the matter. I will offer a buyback guarantee for any purchaser who decides to send it in - should any fully reputable grading service (which I define as PCGS, NGC, ANACS & SEGS) determine this to be a circulated Proof, I will buy the coin back and pay for your fees. Please contact me PRIOR to considering this option; I can also send it in for someone if they are not in a tearing great hurry (contact me for details).
